What it costs, and why this one is different

A screen replacement on the iPad Pro 11-inch (M5) is £969 and a battery is £350, both including VAT. The diagnostic is free and commits you to nothing, and the work carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Apple publishes the same £969 for this model, but before VAT, so its comparable figure is nearer £1,163.

That is a lot for a screen, and you deserve the real reason rather than a shrug.

Two OLED panels, stacked

Apple's own description is unambiguous: "To deliver extreme high brightness over a large, expansive display, iPad Pro uses a Tandem OLED design, with two OLED panels." It is fully laminated into a chassis 5.3 mm thick and drives 1000 nits full screen, peaking at 1600 in HDR.

Apple's sanctioned way to remove it is a heated display removal fixture, a warmed pocket the whole tablet sits in. There is no glass-only path on a laminated tandem OLED, and no realistic way to do this with a heat gun and a set of picks.

On an iPad Pro, the screen itself is serialised

This is the single biggest difference between a Pro and an Air, and almost nobody states it correctly. Apple publishes the parts it tracks for each model. For the iPad Air, that list contains one item, Touch ID. For the iPad Pro M4 and M5, it reads "TrueDepth camera and display".

So on this iPad the display genuinely is a paired component, and what goes in matters in a way it does not on an Air. Apple shows one of three states in Settings afterwards: Genuine, Used, or Unknown.

Apple is also clear those messages "won't affect your ability to use your iPad". What a non-genuine panel affects is the experience: Apple lists missed touches, True Tone not working properly, ambient light sensing lost or degraded, incorrect colour calibration, lower maximum brightness and unintended battery drain.

There is no aftermarket screen for this iPad, and we checked

We would rather say this plainly than quote a cheap option that does not exist. The third-party supply chain stops at the tandem OLED. Aftermarket assemblies are easy to find for the older LCD iPad Pros; for the M4 and M5 there is nothing comparable. One UK distributor's entire listing for the M4 is a sheet of front glass and an alignment mould, a panel-refurbishing consumable rather than a repair. It lists nothing at all for the M5.

What that means in practice is that a cracked screen on this iPad is a genuine-panel job, and priced accordingly. Apple explicitly supports calibrating a display taken from another device of the same model, saying you can "use Repair Assistant to make sure the part is working as expected and calibrated correctly". Done that way the device reads Genuine or Used in Settings rather than Unknown. You will have a firm price before anything starts.

Your battery is behind the most expensive part of the tablet

A battery replacement is £350 including VAT. The cell is 31.29 watt-hours, and the awkward truth is that reaching it means removing that tandem OLED first. iFixit put it well when they said that until the battery becomes more accessible, this iPad will never be more than half repairable.

The good news is that the logic board does not have to come out for a screen or a battery, and the cell is held with stretch-release pull tabs rather than being glued flat. iFixit did note the tabs are fiddly here because the battery is so thin.

Three things people report that Apple documents as normal

Apple states that slight shifts in colour and hue when you view an OLED display at an angle are normal. So is a slight blur or colour change while scrolling against black at low brightness. So is temporary image persistence, which Apple says "will disappear after a few minutes of normal use".

None of those is a failing panel. Genuine burn-in is different and does happen in extreme cases, and we will tell you honestly which one you have.

The port is Thunderbolt, and it is a separate part

This iPad has Thunderbolt and USB 4 rather than plain USB-C, running up to 40Gb/s. Two useful consequences. A complaint that sounds like charging may actually be a data or external-display problem, and the connector is a discrete module, so a worn port is a real repair rather than a logic board replacement.

If yours is a 1TB or 2TB model it may have nano-texture glass, which only those configurations offer. It must not be cleaned with an ordinary cloth or screen wipe: Apple's instruction is to use only the polishing cloth supplied with it.
