What it costs, and why we check stock before promising a date

£679 replaces the screen, £290 replaces the battery, and both figures already include VAT. Diagnostics cost nothing and commit you to nothing, and the work is warranted for 12 months. Apple quotes £679 as well, but excluding VAT, which lands its comparable price nearer £815.

This is the newest iPad Air Apple makes, released on 11 March 2026, and that shapes how we handle it. Apple put the repair manual out on launch day but its own parts did not reach the Self Service Repair store until four weeks later. We confirm we can get the right assembly before we give you a date, rather than promising same-day and then apologising.

600 nits, and why a cheap panel shows on this one

The 13-inch Air runs to 600 nits where the 11-inch stops at 500. That is Apple's own figure, not a marketing line, and it is the single most useful thing to know about replacing this screen.

A panel that only reaches 500 nits is perfectly usable, and on a smaller device you might never notice. On a 13-inch screen you will, particularly near a window or outdoors. It is the reason we would rather talk to you about which assembly goes in than quietly fit the cheapest one and let you find out in July.

Three years of iPad Air look identical, and suppliers know it

The M2, M3 and M4 13-inch Airs share a chassis, a display specification and a 36.59 watt-hour battery. That is genuinely good news for parts supply, and much of the market treats them as one product: most third-party 13-inch assemblies are advertised as fitting 2024, 2025 and 2026 alike.

It is also where mistakes creep in. We have seen a listing sold as an M4 assembly carrying a 2024 A-number in its own title. So we verify what arrives against your device rather than trusting the description on the box. Yours is A3461 for Wi-Fi, A3462 for Wi-Fi and Cellular, or A3464 for the mainland China cellular model, etched on the back and repeated in Settings, General, About.

The screen comes out of a heated pocket

Everything inside is reached through the display, and the display is bonded down all the way round. Apple's documented method for this model is a heated display removal fixture, essentially a warmed pocket the whole tablet sits in, rather than a hot plate and a guitar pick.

Apple's own broken-glass guidance is worth repeating if you are tempted to have a go. It tells technicians not to attempt to remove cracked glass shards without protection, and specifies safety glasses with side shields, cut-resistant gloves, an ESD-safe vacuum and a protective cover bonded over the broken display before any heat is applied. A cracked iPad screen is not a kitchen-table job.

Nothing is wrong with these iPads yet

At roughly six months old there is no established fault pattern for this model, and we are not going to invent one to fill a section. Apple operates no service programme, exchange programme or recall for any iPad Air, and no independent teardown of the 13-inch M4 has been published at all.

So the work we see is accidental: cracked glass, liquid, a bent chassis, a charge port that has taken a knock. On the plus side the USB-C connector is a discrete part Apple documents separately, so a charging fault does not automatically mean a logic board.

A cracked screen will not cost you Touch ID

Worth saying clearly, because a great many repair pages claim otherwise. Apple publishes the list of parts it tracks for each model, and for the iPad Air that list has one item on it: Touch ID. The display is not tracked. Neither is the battery.

Touch ID sits in the top button, a separate component that is never unplugged during a screen replacement. If a non-genuine display goes in you may see a note in Settings about an unknown part; Apple says plainly that such messages do not affect your ability to use the iPad, though they can reduce its trade-in value. Replacing the top button itself is the one repair that genuinely puts fingerprint unlock at risk.
