The price, and what makes the big Air different

A screen replacement on the iPad Air 13-inch (M3) is £649 and a battery is £290, both with VAT included. Diagnostics are free, and every repair carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Apple publishes £649 for this model as well, but before VAT, so the comparable Apple figure is closer to £779.

People often assume the 13-inch costs more simply because the glass is bigger. It is more interesting than that, and Apple's own repair documentation spells it out.

Apple opens this screen in two passes

On the 11-inch Air, the display is heated and cut in a single circuit of the perimeter. On the 13-inch, Apple's published procedure heats and cuts one half, then instructs the technician to release the clamps, rotate the iPad 180 degrees, re-seat the suction cup and cut again.

That is a real difference in bench time and in risk, written down by Apple rather than inferred from the size of the panel. It is the clearest answer we can give when someone asks why the larger Air is dearer to repair than the smaller one sitting next to it.

Eleven pull-tabs against four

The battery tells the same story. Apple's procedure for the 11-inch Air calls for removing four adhesive strips. The 13-inch calls for eleven. Each one is a stretch-release tab that has to be peeled and drawn out without snapping, and every extra strip is another chance to end up prying at a cell that Apple wants fully discharged before anyone starts.

The cell itself is 36.59 watt-hours here against 28.93 in the 11-inch, about a quarter more capacity for the larger, brighter 600-nit panel to drive.

Wi-Fi or cellular? It changes the parts list

This is the question we ask before ordering anything. On the 13-inch Air the Wi-Fi and cellular versions take different display assemblies, different adhesive kits and even different batteries, where the 11-inch gets by with a single battery across both. The top button is specified by colour as well as by connectivity.

Your A-number settles all of it: A3268 is Wi-Fi, A3269 is Wi-Fi and Cellular, A3271 is the mainland China cellular model. It is etched on the back and repeated in Settings, General, About.

Your screen is not tied to your fingerprint

Plenty of repair pages will tell you that a third-party screen kills your biometrics. On an iPad Air that is simply wrong. Apple publishes a list of the parts it tracks on each model, and for the iPad Air that list contains one entry: Touch ID. Not the display, not the battery.

Touch ID lives in the top button and stays connected throughout a display replacement. Apple's own wording separates the two neatly: for a display, running its repair software afterwards is "recommended"; for the top button it is "required to enable security features". The top button is the part where a third-party swap genuinely costs you fingerprint unlock, and it is why we treat that repair differently.

More serviceable than the model before it

One quiet improvement worth knowing. For the 13-inch M2 Air, Apple published a repair manual covering the display and nothing else. For this M3 generation the manual covers eight procedures: display, battery, camera, front camera, speakers, top button, USB-C connector and volume buttons.

The practical effect is that a charge-port fault on this iPad is a defined component-level repair rather than an argument about whether the logic board has to come out.
