Prices for the first 13-inch iPad Air

Screen replacement, £649. Battery, £290. Both include VAT, both follow a free diagnostic that commits you to nothing, and both carry a 12-month warranty on parts and labour. Apple publishes £649 for this iPad too, though its figure excludes VAT, making the true comparison closer to £779.

Apple has no separate screen price for any iPad. Break the glass and it falls under "other damage" on Apple's own pricing page, which is why the number looks so unlike a phone screen.

What Apple added when it made the Air big

This is the first 13-inch iPad Air Apple ever built, announced on 7 May 2024 alongside the 11-inch. It is not simply a stretched version of the smaller one. The panel is 2732 by 2048 and runs to 600 nits where the 11-inch stops at 500, and the battery grows from 28.93 watt-hours to 36.59, roughly a quarter more cell to drive it.

Both of those matter after a repair. A non-genuine panel that only reaches 500 nits is noticeably duller on a screen this size, and the larger cell is the reason the battery job is priced above the 11-inch.

The tooling is not the same as the 11-inch

Here is something almost nobody mentions. Apple publishes separate tool lists for the two sizes, and four of the fixtures exist in a 13-inch-only version: the display protective cover, the heated display pocket, the repair tray and the display adhesive alignment tray. A workshop kitted out for the 11-inch cannot follow Apple's procedure on a 13-inch without buying more equipment.

The parts split further than most people expect too. The Wi-Fi and cellular versions take different display assemblies, with different adhesive, so there are four possible screens across the two Air sizes. Ordering by name rather than by A-number is how a repair ends up delayed. Yours will be A2898, A2899 or A2900.

Why a bigger screen does not have to cost more to fit

The extra burden of a 13-inch job lands on the workshop rather than on you. Two other UK independents we checked publish identical prices for their 11-inch and 13-inch M2 Air screen work, which tells you the difference is in stock and kit rather than in labour hours. Apple's cutting procedure is the same on both sizes, down to the same 3.5 mm maximum cut depth.

Our £649 sits above the 11-inch because a 13-inch assembly costs more to buy and ties up more stock, not because the tablet takes longer to open.

Speaker faults are the honest exception

Most things on this iPad can be repaired. The speakers are the one part where the answer is usually no. When iFixit took a 13-inch M2 Air apart they found the speakers built into the chassis with their driver magnets bonded firmly in place, and described them as effectively as unserviceable as the ones in an iPad Pro.

That is worth knowing at the counter, because the 13-inch is the model people buy for films and music, so speaker complaints do come up. We will always look, but we will tell you early if it is not an economic fix rather than take the device apart to reach the same conclusion.

Your fingerprint reader is safe

A cracked screen on this iPad does not put Touch ID at risk. Touch ID is in the top button, a separate part that is never unplugged during a display replacement. Apple's own parts and service history page lists a single tracked part for the iPad Air, and it is Touch ID. The display is not on that list and neither is the battery.

You may see a note in Settings afterwards saying an unknown part was fitted if the display is not a genuine Apple one. Apple is explicit that those messages "won't affect your ability to use your iPad", though an unknown part can affect what the device is worth in trade.
