Repair or replace? The maths moved this year

A screen replacement on the iPad Air 11-inch (M4) is £529 and a battery is £250, both including VAT. The diagnostic is free and the work carries a 12-month warranty on parts and labour.

Set that against a new one. This iPad launched in March 2026 at £599 for the Wi-Fi model. On 25 June 2026 Apple raised prices across fifteen product lines, citing memory and storage costs, and the same iPad now starts at £749. So a repair that would have saved you around £70 at launch saves closer to £220 today. Nothing about the device changed; the replacement cost did.

Apple publishes no separate screen price for any iPad. On Apple's pricing page a cracked screen falls under "other damage", listed at £529 for this model before VAT, which lands near £635 once VAT is added.

Six months old, so there is no fault list

We would rather be straight than pad this out. At the time of writing this iPad is about six months old, and there is no established fault pattern for it. Apple runs no service programme, exchange programme or recall covering any iPad Air, and there is no published teardown or repairability score for this generation at all.

What that means practically is that almost everything we see on an M4 Air is accidental: cracked glass, liquid, a bent chassis, a damaged charge port. If yours has stopped working and nothing happened to it, that is unusual enough to be worth a free diagnostic before you assume the worst.

IP42 is splash resistance, not waterproofing

Apple's own regulatory labelling puts this iPad at IP42. That means protection against dripping water at an angle and against solid objects above a millimetre. It is not IP67 and it is not IP68, and it offers effectively nothing against immersion.

We mention it because people reasonably assume a 2026 tablet shrugs off a spill. Liquid damage on an iPad is a genuine repair rather than a wipe-down, and the sooner it arrives the better the odds.

The improvement everybody credits to the M4 actually arrived a year earlier

There is a story doing the rounds that Apple made the M4 Air far more repairable. The primary documents do not support it. Apple's manual for the 2024 M2 Air covered one procedure, the display. The manuals for the 2025 M3 and the 2026 M4 each cover the same eight: display, battery, camera, front camera, speakers, top button, USB-C connector and volume buttons.

So the serviceability jump happened at the M3. The M4 did not add a single serviceable part over its predecessor. The useful part of that for you is that the USB-C connector is a discrete component here, so a worn charging port is a defined repair rather than a logic-board argument.

Telling an M4 from an M3 or an M2

The three generations are dimensionally identical, 247.6 by 178.5 by 6.1 mm, with the same display specification and the same 28.93 watt-hour battery. Weight differs by a couple of grams. You cannot pick them apart by eye and neither can we.

Read the A-number: A3459 for Wi-Fi, A3460 for Wi-Fi and Cellular, A3463 for the mainland China cellular model. Two software tells confirm it if you would rather check in Settings: the M4 reports 12GB of memory where the M2 and M3 report 8GB, and it is the only 11-inch Air with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

There is no SIM tray to inspect on any of them. Cellular models are eSIM only, so lost mobile data is a question for your network before it is a question for us.
