What you will pay, and why we ask for your A-number first

Two numbers, then the reason we ask which iPad Air you actually own. Screens are £499 and batteries £230, VAT included, each after a free diagnostic and each covered for 12 months on parts and labour. Apple lists the same £499, but before VAT, which puts its comparable figure near £599.

Before any of that, we check what you actually own. There is a good reason.

Three generations, one body

The M3 Air is a chip upgrade and very little else. Set Apple's spec sheets for the 2024 M2, the 2025 M3 and the 2026 M4 side by side and the display is identical bullet for bullet, the chassis measures the same 247.6 by 178.5 by 6.1 mm, and the battery is 28.93 watt-hours on all three. The published weights differ by two grams.

That is genuinely useful news for repair, because parts made for one tend to serve the others, and supply is healthier as a result. It is also a trap. You cannot tell an M2 from an M3 from an M4 by looking, and neither can we. The A-number on the back is the only reliable answer: A3266 or A3267 means you have the M3, A2902 and A2903 are the 2024 M2, A3459 and A3460 are the 2026 M4.

Check your battery health before you buy a battery

A battery is £230 including VAT, and this is a model where you can do your own homework first. Settings, then Battery, then Battery Health gives you Maximum Capacity and Cycle Count. Apple designs these cells to hold at least 80% of their original capacity after 1,000 complete charge cycles, so a device sitting comfortably above that with a modest cycle count probably has a software problem rather than a worn cell.

Come in with those two numbers and the conversation gets much shorter. Where the reading does show real wear, the replacement is straightforward: the cell is held with stretch-release adhesive strips rather than being glued flat, so it lifts out without heat once the display is off.

A cracked screen will not touch your fingerprint reader

This is worth stating plainly because so many pages get it wrong. On an iPad Air, Apple tracks exactly one part: Touch ID. The display is not tracked, and neither is the battery. Touch ID itself sits in the top button, a separate component that stays connected throughout a screen replacement.

What a non-genuine display can affect is calibration rather than security. Apple lists the honest risks as touch response, Apple Pencil accuracy, True Tone behaviour, ambient light sensing and colour or brightness uniformity. Those are real, and they are why the part you fit matters. Losing your fingerprint unlock is not on that list.

The display comes out through heat, not force

Everything inside this iPad is reached through the screen, and the screen is bonded down. Apple's procedure calls for a heated removal fixture to soften the perimeter adhesive, then a cutter worked round the edge to a maximum depth of 3.5 mm in a chassis 6.1 mm thick. The iPad has to be powered down first, and Apple is blunt about it: failing to do so damages the display and other parts.

The screws are single use. They are coated with a thread adhesive that does not survive being undone, so a proper job replaces them rather than refitting the originals.

Two upgrades that were not upgrades

The M3 Air did not add Apple Pencil Pro support. The M2 already had it, and both work with the Apple Pencil Pro and the Apple Pencil (USB-C) and neither supports the Apple Pencil 2nd generation. If a Pencil will not pair, check which Pencil it is before assuming the digitiser is at fault.

Apple did launch a new Magic Keyboard alongside it, at £269 rather than £299, with a larger trackpad and a function row. It also quietly lost its backlit keys and aluminium palm rest. It fits the M2, M3 and M4 Airs alike.
