Phone security reset for Sudbury, Suffolk: a phone and tablet being fully erased and reinstalled at the mendmyi workshop in Haverhill

Phone Security Reset in Sudbury

Scam call, remote access, or a phone that feels like someone else is on it. A full erase and clean reinstall, about an hour, £24.

Sudbury has had more than its share of this lately: counterfeit bank letters doing the rounds in CO10 telling people their accounts are under investigation, and in July 2026 a Babergh woman in her seventies rung by callers claiming to be her bank and the National Crime Agency.

When a call like that has got as far as your phone, the bank's instruction is usually the same, get it reset. Bring it over from Sudbury to our shop at 3 Queen Street in Haverhill, about 30 minutes away, and it is erased, reinstalled and back with you in about an hour, with a report for the device. No appointment. If you cannot make the trip, ask for a free tracked mail-in label. Before either, find your Apple Account or Google Account password, because the phone will not set up again without it, and make sure the passwords you care about have already been changed from a different device.

How does a security reset work from Sudbury?

The reset itself is the easy part. The passwords and the backup are what people forget, and without them the phone comes back clean but empty.

1

Save your passwords, then back up

Your Apple Account or Google Account password first, because it is what gets you back in after the erase, then every other login you use. Check iCloud Backup or Google backup and photo sync are on before you set off: everything on the device is erased, and what comes back is what was synced.

2

Bring it or send it

Walk into 3 Queen Street from Sudbury or ask us for a free tracked label. No appointment needed for a walk-in.

3

Full erase and clean install

We wipe the device completely and reinstall the operating system fresh, so nothing a scammer installed or changed survives. About an hour.

4

Back to you, set up as new

You get it back running a clean install, ready to sign in with your own account. Set it up as new rather than restoring a backup from before the scam. Want us to do that part and move your data back? That is our separate Data Transfer service, £24.

What does the reset clear?

Anything that lives on the device. Remote-access apps a caller talked you into installing, apps you do not recognise, management profiles, changed settings, and whatever else was put there. The storage is erased and the operating system goes back on clean, so there is nothing for it to hide in. That includes anything you would call a virus: on a modern phone the erase destroys the encryption keys, so what was on the storage is unreadable afterwards, named or not, and the NCSC's advice for a phone that may be infected is exactly this, a factory reset rather than a scan.

What will a security reset not fix?

It does not change your passwords or secure your bank account. If someone had your phone, treat your email and banking logins as seen: change them from another device, turn on two-step verification, and speak to your bank on 159. Our guide on what to do if your phone is hacked walks through the order.

Scam calls in Sudbury

Sudbury is an old market town on the Stour, still trading on Market Hill every Thursday and Saturday, with three working silk mills and a wide spread of Babergh villages, Great Cornard and Ballingdon looking to it for shops and services. A good share of its people are long-established residents, many of them retired, and a good share commute out each day, which is roughly the two groups scam callers go for: the one at home to answer the landline, and the one with the bank app, the work email and the family photos all on a single phone. Suffolk Police put fraud at more than 40 per cent of recorded crime in the county, and Sudbury was one of the towns named in the courier-fraud run of winter 2024 into 2025.

Sudbury security reset questions

I had one of the fake bank letters. Do I need my phone reset?

The letter on its own does not touch your phone. What matters is what happened next. If you rang the number on it, gave details, or installed anything at a caller's request, treat the phone as compromised and have it erased. If you binned the letter and did nothing else, keep it as evidence, report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040, and the phone is fine.

Is there anywhere in Sudbury that does this, or is it Haverhill?

It is Haverhill. We have one shop, at 3 Queen Street, and no counter in Sudbury. From CO10 that is about half an hour, and the reset itself is about an hour, so most people make a morning of it. If the journey is the problem, the free tracked mail-in label gets the phone to us and back without you leaving the house.

Can you check the phone without wiping it?

We can read it for the obvious signs, a jailbreak, a management profile, accounts that are not yours, but a clean reading is not proof there is nothing there, and we will not tell you a phone is safe on that basis. If a scammer has had access, the erase is the only answer that does not depend on guessing what they did. That is why the bank asks for it.

I am in my seventies and not confident with the setup afterwards. Can you do that bit?

Yes. The reset leaves the phone clean and ready to sign in. Our separate Data Transfer service takes it from there: we sign in with you, bring your contacts, photos and messages back from your Apple or Google account and reinstall the apps you use. Book it alongside the reset and the whole thing is done in one visit.

Will my bank refund the money if I get the phone reset?

The reset and the refund are separate. Since October 2024, UK banks must reimburse most authorised push payment fraud up to £85,000 if you report it promptly and cooperate; nothing in those rules requires a reset. The reset is about trusting the phone again, and a bank that has blocked its app on your phone will want it done before the app works. Report first, on 159, then bring the phone.
