Phone security reset for Haverhill, Suffolk: a phone and tablet being fully erased and reinstalled at the mendmyi workshop in Haverhill

Phone Security Reset in Haverhill

Scam call, remote access, or a phone that feels like someone else is on it. A full erase and clean reinstall, about an hour, £24.

Walk into 3 Queen Street with the phone your bank has told you to reset, and it is usually back in your hand within the hour.

That is the whole of it for anyone in Haverhill: no post, no collection, no day without a phone. The people who come in have mostly had the same morning, a call that sounded like the fraud team, an app installed because the caller asked, then the real bank on the line saying the phone is not to be trusted until it is wiped. Hand it over, go and get a coffee on the High Street or do the shopping, and come back to a phone that has been fully erased and reinstalled, with a report to show the bank. The one thing to do before you leave the house is find your Apple Account or Google Account password, because the phone will ask for it the moment it restarts.

How does a security reset work from Haverhill?

The reset itself is the easy part. The passwords and the backup are what people forget, and without them the phone comes back clean but empty.

1

Save your passwords, then back up

Your Apple Account or Google Account password first, because it is what gets you back in after the erase, then every other login you use. Check iCloud Backup or Google backup and photo sync are on before you set off: everything on the device is erased, and what comes back is what was synced.

2

Bring it or send it

Walk into 3 Queen Street or ask us for a free tracked label. No appointment needed for a walk-in.

3

Full erase and clean install

We wipe the device completely and reinstall the operating system fresh, so nothing a scammer installed or changed survives. About an hour.

4

Back to you, set up as new

You get it back running a clean install, ready to sign in with your own account. Set it up as new rather than restoring a backup from before the scam. Want us to do that part and move your data back? That is our separate Data Transfer service, £24.

What does the reset clear?

Anything that lives on the device. Remote-access apps a caller talked you into installing, apps you do not recognise, management profiles, changed settings, and whatever else was put there. The storage is erased and the operating system goes back on clean, so there is nothing for it to hide in. That includes anything you would call a virus: on a modern phone the erase destroys the encryption keys, so what was on the storage is unreadable afterwards, named or not, and the NCSC's advice for a phone that may be infected is exactly this, a factory reset rather than a scan.

What will a security reset not fix?

It does not change your passwords or secure your bank account. If someone had your phone, treat your email and banking logins as seen: change them from another device, turn on two-step verification, and speak to your bank on 159. Our guide on what to do if your phone is hacked walks through the order.

Scam calls in Haverhill

Haverhill is a working town rather than a commuter one, and that shapes who walks through our door with this. A lot of people here are on shifts at the manufacturing, food and science plants on the industrial estate, and a lot of families are on the Clements, Chalkstone, Hanchett Village and Burton End estates, where one phone is the banking app, the rota and the school messages at once. Posting that phone away for three days is not an option, which is why the hour matters more here than anywhere. Suffolk Police now put fraud at more than 40 per cent of all crime recorded in the county, and Haverhill was one of the towns named when courier fraud ran through West Suffolk in the winter of 2024 into 2025, with an 83-year-old in the Haverhill area losing £56,000 over ten days.

Haverhill security reset questions

Can I wait in the shop while you do it?

You can, though most people in Haverhill go and do something else for the hour. We are at 3 Queen Street, a short walk from the High Street and Market Square, so a coffee or the shopping fits neatly into the time it takes. There is no appointment to book. Turn up with the phone and your account password and we start straight away.

My bank has blocked its app on my phone. Will this get it working again?

Usually, yes. When a bank's app decides a phone is unsafe it stays blocked until the phone has been fully erased and set up again as new. That is exactly what the reset is. Once you sign in on the clean phone and reinstall the banking app, it registers the device afresh. If the bank has also frozen the account, that part is a call to them on 159, not something the phone can fix.

What if I do not know my Apple ID or Google password?

Sort that out before we erase anything, because after the wipe the phone will not activate without it. Reset the password from another device, a family member's phone or a laptop, using the recovery email or number on the account. If you have just changed a Google password, Google asks you to wait 24 hours before a factory reset, so come in the next day. We will not erase a phone we cannot get back into.

Will I lose my photos?

Anything stored only on the phone goes. Anything already in iCloud or Google Photos comes back when you sign in, along with contacts and saved passwords. Have a look at your photo settings before you come in: if backup is switched on, you are fine. If it is not, and you want them kept, we can talk through options at the counter before anything is erased.

Does a reset mean my money is safe?

No, it means the phone is safe. The accounts are a separate job: change your email and banking passwords from a different device, switch on two-step verification, and speak to your bank by dialling 159. If money has gone, report it to Report Fraud on 0300 123 2040. Do that this morning, then bring the phone in.
